當年隨團畫家威廉・亞歷山大隨團訪問時畫的一批水彩畫，因其內容涉及中國政治、經濟、社會生活諸方面，它們不但成為18世紀西方了解中國的最早的形象資料，還成為此後西方人關於東方景象的一個重要創作來源。
At the end of the 18th century, the British King George III sent a huge Delegation to China celebrating the Qianlong emperor's birthday. The Delegation, led by Lord McCartney intent to to open up trade with China.
During the visit in China, Royal painter William Alexander did a number of watercolor paintings which covered the aspects of China's political, economic and social life. These paintings become a 18th century Westerners' understanding of the Chinese society.
