Artist Creates Impressive Optical Illusions
These Line Drawings Look Like They're Moving On Paper
Barrier-grid animation is an effect that takes place when a striped, transparent overlay is moved across an interlaced image. When an image is broken down into small lines and a striped, opaque overlay is held above it, the drawing will create the optical illusion of it moving on the paper.
Nathan Cox, of Suffolk, has created quite the reputation on popular social media site, TikTok, by creating a whole host of optical illusions using just a pen a paper.
From making Dinosaurs and Wild Cats run to having birds fly and balls roll, Nathan creates his amazing optical illusions by passing a layer of black paper, which contains striped gaps, over his drawings, to help make them come to life.
Like traditional animation, he draws separate frames/pictures, but all in one spot. Then the striped paper blocks out all but one frame at a time. As it moves along it reveals the next frame/segment of picture, making it look like a sequence of images, which is exactly what animation is.
